The Asset Management Laboratory aims to implement scientific research into practice, facilitate asset management education, and facilitate academic asset management research. It brings together a large group of asset management practitioners, students and PhD students of the TU Delft involving multiple TU Delft faculties.

The Initiative of Asset Management Laboratory by TU Delft & Rijkswaterstaat

The Netherlands has invested significantly in reliable, safe and available infrastructure for  the country. A large part of these investments was done in the 60’s and 70’s of the last century. This aging infrastructure however is heavily burdened. In coming years expectations are that this infrastructure needs to be replaced, and in such a way that it facilitates future societal and economic needs. To facilitate this replacement new methods are needed in practice (such as: risk management, LCA, performance measurement, etc.)

Next to the aging of our infrastructure networks we will also see an exodus of highly experienced technical personnel and an expected insufficient inflow of young personnel. Our current educational system needs to adapt and start teaching the new methods needed for the future. Increasing expectations by the environment of increasingly complex infrastructures that increasingly affect each other (both on national and international level) also begs the  reinforcement of research into the effects of these trends.

Infrastructure managers in the Netherlands are concerned with the professionalization of the asset management practices in their organizations. Infrastructure managers can benefit from each other by jointly tackling (research) projects and organizing events geared towards mutual learning. This is reason for Rijkswaterstaat to facilitate in the creation of an Asset Management Lab at the TU Delft (AMLab).
